Today, after receiving a pair of free tickets to the Pistons/Nuggets game at the Palace, I had a few reactions.
My first one was, “Hell Yeah! Free Pistons Tickets!”
The second one was, “Have I seen Carmelo Anthony in person?” I had to think about it, but nope, I’ve never seen ‘Melo play.

Tim Donaghy, the referee who spent 15 months in a federal prison for his role in a betting scandal that rocked the NBA, is out of prison and looking to make a splash once again.
The NBA did a phenomenal job sweeping the whole Donaghy scandal under the rug as best they could when the revelations were made public that he had ties to organized crime and that he may or may not have affected the outcomes of NBA games.

Officially, attendance was listed for the Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies game last night at 10,012.
The only way that number was over 10,000 is if you took every person in the arena, counted every person whose number was stored in their cell phone, and multiplied it by two.

There are some familiar faces atop some of the big categories. Kobe leads the league in scoring. Nash leads the league in assists. Rondo leads the league in steals.

I wrote a short blog last week about Allen Iverson being unhappy with his role in Memphis, and I predicted that by March 1st the Grizzlies would send him home.
I mean, it was obvious that it was a marriage that was doomed from the start.

Last week in “Fun With Box Scores” I took a look at about ten different things that jumped out from the previous week’s box scores.
It was the initial plan to roll out ten more fun little facts that I discovered while rummaging through the box scores this week, but I came across one box score that was so unique that I don’t feel like any other stat line from the week is worthy of being in the same post as this one.

LeBron James makes his only trip to Madison Square Garden tonight.
For the past two seasons there has been plenty of talk about LeBron bolting his hometown of Cleveland for the bright lights of New York City.

He fooled me yet again.
We’ve seen this act before. Andrew Bynum, through the first five games, is averaging over 20-10, yet again.
It’s nothing new. For the third straight season, the young, potential stud, center for the Los Angeles Lakers has hit the ground running and has shown flashes of being an all-star caliber center in the NBA.

Happy New Year!
With the new NBA season set to tip off with four games tonight, here are some of the things I’ll be watching for in tonight’s action.
Boston @ Cleveland, 7:30pm
I can’t wait to see LeBron again this season. Last year, coming off the Olympics, you could see that his focus was on improving defensively. Now, without a summer in the spotlight, I’m curious to see if he’s made any improvements to his already unreal game. Is this the year we finally see LeBron use his Karl Malone-like body to beast on people inside?

Orlando Magic: Can they win the big game?
Orlando Magic make the NBA finals as the underdog for the whole series against Cleveland. Even when the Orlando Magic were up in the series 3 to 1, sports analysis and fans of the NBA were still doubting the Magic, but Dwight Howard stepped up HUGE in game 6, as he scored 40 points and grapped 14 rebounds. Hopefully for the Magic's sake he can perform at that level of intensity. Another playing that has been stepping up all playoffs long, was Rashard Lewis with 18 points and he had 8 rebounds. Lebron scored only 25 points (only. lol), compared to his average against the Magic in the Eastern Conference finals being over 35 ppg.

Why Team USA Almost Lost....
Defense: Going into these Olympic games, there were a few basic concerns for Team USA on the defensive end. How would an undersized US team defend the post with only one and a half centers (Dwight Howard and Chris Bosh) and how would they effectively defend the perimeter against hot shooting European or Latin American teams? In the gold medal game against Spain, Team USA’s defense was horrific. While it seemed this team had gotten progressively better defensively throughout the Olympics, Team USA allowed Spain to shoot over 60% from the floor in the first half. Marc Gasol was having his way on the inside. Spain repeatedly ran alley-oop, pick and rolls which the U.S. was unable to stop. Juan Carlos Navarro scored at will with running jump shots, breaking down whoever was covering him. And future NBAer Rudy Fernandez, 7-13 from the floor, looked like he could have started for the Americans. In the final game, rather than rely on their defense, which to date had been their staple, Team USA counted on their offense to bail them out.

When the original Dream Team tore through the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, it was like the Beatles reunited. With the likes of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Karl Malone, John Stockton, and Clyde Drexler suiting up, the team touted so much star power that opposing teams didn’t mind getting drubbed by over forty points a game. Although a gold medal for Team USA was a forgone conclusion before the games even began, the team was still a joy to watch. It was arguably the greatest sports team ever assembled.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics is upon us and decorated swimmer Michael Phelps is not the only recognizable American hoping to return home with gold. There are twelve other American athletes, the men who comprise Team USA Basketball, who this time travel to China with a chip on their shoulders, for they are no longer considered the best in their sport. On August 10th, Team USA Basketball officially begins their quest for Olympic gold, a shot at redemption and the right to once again proclaim that America’s brand of basketball is the best on the planet.

Apparently the Miami Heat and the Phoenix Suns have agreed on a trade that would send Shaquille O'Neal to Phoenix in exchange for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. I believe this is simply a knee-jerk reaction to the Los Angeles Lakers' acquisition of Pau Gasol (a brilliant move by L.A., by the way) and do not see how this trade can make sense from the Suns' vantage point.

The Orlando Magic will face the depleted Miami Heat team that has been struggling with injuries this year. Already without Shaq and Alonzo Mourning, the team learned that they will be playing tonight without All-Star starter Dwayne Wade who is out with Flu like symptoms. Also out of the line-up for tonights game is forward Udonis Haslem, the only player to have started all previous 43 games of the season with a left knee sprain as he collided with a player from the Boston Celtics in their last game.
